the mirror has returned. celebrated in the seventies in disco ball form, and in the eighties (everywhere - coffee tables, ceilings, more coffee tables), the mirrored surface as decoration disappeared briefly in the 90s so that we wouldn't have to come face to face with our horrifying giant hammer pants and grunge chic plaid leggings-ness (please hammer, don't hurt us anymore).

now it seems everywhere i turn there is some reflective surface. are we back to our vain ways? (probably). could the culprit for this trend be that irritating television commercial (for a television no less) in which the pre-pubescent girl tells the elephant "it's all about the meeerrrs (mirrors)???" could they have found someone MORE unable to pronounce the word MIR-RORs??

but back to the lecture at hand:

yesterday i rearranged my entire living room in an attempt to liven things up a bit. it worked! having the couch by the windows is nice because it makes it much easier to spy on my neighbors, and the whole place just feels more open and less like a zoo for dust bunnies.

today, i looked around a bit for a replacement coffee table. my current table, like much of my furniture, i inherited from a roommate who abandoned it. it's terribly wide and the wrong height, has some peeling "wood" pieces. it sucks.

when i was in college i went to a christmas party at a senior's house. instead of a sparkling tower of natural light cans, she had put out three beautiful punch bowls with different kinds of punch, and an assortment of mismatched glass tea cups and punch glasses. it may be the drinks talking, but it was a wonderful party! i thought it was an indication of what it would be to live in the adult world.

of course, i went right out and bought my own little vintage punch bowl and glasses (which i think is still stuffed in the attic of my parent's house. oops). now that the holiday season is fast approaching, i looked online for some good deals for entertaining-ware.

there is a variety of vintage and new punch bowls and cups available on ebay for less than $20-30 (you might need to splurge on shipping). of course there are the red and green versions, but i love the bubbly almost clear glass kinds the best.

i'm having kind of an emotional day, and i don't know what started it, my dream about winning the lottery (and waking up to find out it wasn't true), or seeing this kitchen table.

hello!

this is officially the first post of the flat bandit. the goal is simple: find affordable apartments and cool furniture for excellent people in fabulous neighborhoods. it IS possible. i recently found a couple (2) of apartments for some friends in brooklyn for less than a fortune. there is also so much cool new stuff out there, i thought it would be nice to be able to access all the information in one place.
